Matthew W. Hutnick Rejoins Steptoe & Johnson’s Wheeling Office

Wheeling, W.Va. – Matthew W. Hutnick has rejoined the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson PLLC as a Member in the firm’s Wheeling, West Virginia office. He joins the firm’s Energy Department, focusing his practice on oil and gas, coal, and coalbed methane contracts and real estate matters. Hutnick was previously an Associate with the firm before joining CONSOL Energy Inc., which was later renamed CNX Resources Corporation after the separation of the company’s oil and gas and coal businesses.

Hutnick was Assistant General Counsel at CNX Resources Corporation for ten years before rejoining Steptoe & Johnson. He has deep experience providing legal counsel on real property matters, including the acquisition and divestiture of surface, oil and gas, and coal assets, and drafting and negotiating lease, license, right of way, and easement agreements. His experience also includes navigating green technology and environmental attribute matters, for which he has handled intellectual property, carbon offsets, renewable energy credits, emission reduction credits, and low carbon fuel credits. 

Hutnick earned his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his bachelor’s degree from Colgate University.
