Separations and Divorce

Steptoe & Johnson’s Family Law attorneys help clients navigate the difficult and often emotional legalities of separations and divorce. Our attorneys are equipped to identify tax, real estate, corporate, and financial matters that arise in divorce actions as well as assist with challenging custodial situations.

Valuation of Businesses and Assets

Our attorneys assist clients in assessing the values of their businesses and other complex assets during the dissolution of their marriages and will assist in the division of assets and liabilities. Steptoe & Johnson is equipped to help clients navigate property division in domestic litigation, provide prefiling assistance in identifying and dividing assets, and assist in the corporate matters that arise from the division and/or transfer of ownership of marital business interests.

Child Custody and Guardianship Disputes

Our attorneys have successfully led clients through child custody disputes both in trial and in modifications. They have worked through proceedings related to the International Child Abduction Remedies Act (ICARA), establishing legal rights for the prompt return of children who have been wrongfully removed or retained internationally, and have worked through Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA) matters where a child has been wrongfully taken by a parent from one state to another state. Our team regularly guides clients through child support and guardianship issues.

Domestic Violence

Our attorneys are equipped to handle domestic violence issues arising from physical, emotional, financial, and verbal abuse, and they offer the care and compassion these sensitive matters require.

Elder Abuse and Financial Exploitation

Steptoe & Johnson attorneys have experience and can provide practical support in advocating for elderly clients by identifying and addressing abuse, filing protective orders, seeking legal remedies for financial exploitation, working with authorities and families on advocacy and support, and representing clients in any potential litigation. Our team also has experience in estate litigation arising from will and/or trust administration disputes.

Representative Experience

  • Represented a father in an international custody dispute in obtaining the return of his children to live with him in Brazil
  • Represented a victim of domestic violence in obtaining permission to relocate with their parties’ children to the state where her family of origin resides. In addition, she obtained a published opinion establishing that the victim of domestic violence should have been awarded substantially all of her attorney’s fees incurred in the litigation
  • Represented a client in an action regarding an award of a substantial asset that was impossible to properly value at the time of the trial, resulting in a published opinion from the Oklahoma Supreme Court establishing the law as urged by our attorneys
  • Represented the trustee of a substantial trust in which the alleged damages were more than $18 million. Our attorneys successfully defended the case, and a published opinion affirmed the decision that the trustee acted properly
  • Represented a guardian in a substantial guardianship to guide them in the proper exercise of their fiduciary duties
