Overview
Steptoe & Johnson’s Long-Term Care Team is made up of attorneys, legal assistants, and legal nurse consultants from the firm’s litigation, business, and labor groups. Team members represent owners, operators, and developers of all types of long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health agencies, and continuing care retirement communities.
Our services include patient care liability defense; labor and employment representation, including wrongful termination, counseling, and workers’ compensation; and regulatory compliance, including assistance with the development of plans of correction and appeals of regulatory citations. Our team is fully prepared to represent long-term care providers of any size with all their needs in the litigation-intensive health care field.

Representative Experience
- Defended multiple long-term care facilities in claims involving medical negligence (including wound development, infection, falls, understaffing, and malnutrition), and punitive conduct
- Successfully litigated hundreds of wrongful death cases
- Won summary judgment on behalf of a long-term care facility in claims alleging medical negligence
- Won arbitrations for long-term care groups involving disputes with unions
- Successfully compelled arbitration of patient care claims in state and federal court
- Defended operator of long-term care facilities in claims of medically resistant staph infections
- Assisted in the sale of assets of a substantial independent and assisted living facility and related nursing home, which necessitated the defeasance of publicly held tax-exempt indebtedness
- Represented a nursing facility in litigation to prevent re-zoning of nearby agricultural land for industrial use
